Volunteer Information & Schedule for St. David's Episcopal Rotation

About Driving the Mini-bus:

Families participating in the DayBreak Shelter Program spend evenings and nights at one of the various participating churches and days at the Day Center at Peace Brethren Church located at 12727 SE Market. Participating churches provide transportation in the morning from their overnight church to the Day Center and in the evenings back from the Day Center to the overnight church.

Driving volunteers can either volunteer to drive both the AM and PM shifts on a particular day or drive only either AM or PM.


Driver Volunteer Information:

During the Inner Southeast Church Group's hosting week, host families overnight at St David's Church, located at:
2800 SE Harrison

AM drivers:

  • Arrive at St. David's church at:
    7am Sunday thru Friday
    9am Saturday
    Note: The Day Center opens later on Saturdays.
  • Pick up the keys for the mini-bus which are kept in the mailbox marked "Daybreak" in the main hallway
  • Also be sure to grab the black brief case which contains DayBreak Shelter log book. This can be obtained from the overnight host.
  • Use the mini-bus to drive the DayBreak Shelter participates to the Day Center located in the basement of the Peace Brethren church at:

    leaving your car in St David's parking lot.
  • When you arrive at the Day Center, update the log with the mileage and number of participates transported. The log is kept on a clipboard on the front dash of the van.
  • There is a key to the day center on the key ring.. The day center staff has asked us to stay with the guests should they be running a little late.
  • Give black brief case containing the DayBreak Shelter log book to staff member at Day Center
  • Return the mini-bus to St. David's and return the keys to the box you found them in. If the door is locked place the keys in the US mail slot in the front of the church.

PM drivers:

  • Pick up the van at St. David's at:
    5pm Saturday through Friday
    4pm Sunday
    Note: The Day Center closes at 4:30 on Sundays.
  • Pick up the keys for the mini-bus which are kept in the office mail box marked "Daybreak" in the main hallway. If the keys are not in the mail box, check the US mail slot in the front of the church. (The church will be open by 5pm for the cooks.)
  • Pick up host families at the Day Center in the basement of the Peace Brethren church, located at:

  • Also pick up the DayBreak Shelter log book in the black brief case to return to St David's church
  • When you arrive back at St David's, update the log with the van mileage and number of participates transported. The log is kept on a clipboard on the front dash of the bus.
  • Place keys in the same mail box inside the church in the main hall.
  • Place the black brief case containing the log book in the overnight host room (the first room on your left heading for kitchen.)

  • Please note in the communication section of the DayBreak Shelter log for that week and day any issues that arise during you shift that the Day Center should be aware of. Examples might be continuously causing the van to leave late, not respecting curfew or other schedules, verbal abuse, not respecting property, or if any other Guest Guidelines are not followed. Please also feel free to include positive comments when appropriate as well!
    Note: The Day Center staff will issue violations to guests who do not comply with the Guest Guidelines.
  • Fill van gas tank at 1/4 full with the gas using the gas card located in the black brief case with the log book. Please use the Fuel Man station located on SE 122nd (if going N on 122nd it is on your right before Stark on the left side.(As a general rule the tank will be filled the first day of the shelter by the coordinator's so it is highly unlikely that this will need to be done during the week)
  • Guests are only to be transported from the church to the Day Center unless you are otherwise directed by Day Center staff.
